Financial Analyst
Government of Alberta, Treasury Department (May 1994 - Apr 1996)
My first REAL job! I worked in Treasury while I finished my Masters degree. Although not initially pleased with this position, looking back, I see it was a very valuable experience.
Brand Manager, Field Marketing Manager, Market Analyst
Molson/Coors (Apr 1996 - Mar 2003)
As a young man just out of school I couldn't resist moving on from, what I thought was "boring" government work in the finance industry, to a vibrant city, marketing BEER to western Canada and eventually the entire country.
Entrepreneur
MJS Importing (Apr 2003 - Jun 2004)
This was a very interesting foray. After leaving Molson I went out on my own to market beer. I had a few successes but a whole bunch of failure. This was a great learning period for me.
Manager
TELUS Communications (Jun 2004 - Aug 2006)
Running out of money, I joined one of the premiere companies in Calgary not involved in the energy sector. I did very well here but the culture wasn't a great fit. I was also determined to get back into marketing.
Strategic Marketing Manager
Venture Communications (Aug 2006 - Apr 2007)
I got back into marketing but, as you can see, I wasn't with Venture for very long. However, I learned A LOT in a short time. Mostly I complemented my marketing planning skills with Venture's fairly good brand development process. This company has changed quite a bit since I was there.
Financial Planner/Investment Advisor*
Richardson GMP (Nov 2013 - March 2017)
Macquarie Private Wealth (Apr 2012 - Nov 2013)
Wolverton Securities (Oct 2009 - Apr 2012)
Signature Capital (Jul 2007 - Sep 2009)
My career comes full circle as I return to my roots in the financial sector. I teamed up with a college friend already in the advisory business to help him build a wealth management platform. We moved from Wolverton Securities to Macquarie Private Wealth as the former was not a good fit for our platform. Macquarie was eventually sold to Richardson GMP where we remain today.
Cross-Border Financial Planner
KeatsConnelly & Associates (Jun 2017 - Present)
A chance to integrate my two CFP®s to help client's navigate the complexities of a cross-border move.
*Technically, my current role was "Business Development Assistant". When I moved to the United States, I willingly gave up my registration to lessen compliance complications. My role did not really change other than I was no longer able to advise clients directly. I must stress that giving up my registration was not due to any disciplinary reasons.
